Considering the movie is about a man with a camera, to say the least, most of my inspiration came from f-stops, lenses and the view point behind the camera.

Client : This was a guerilla/ambient piece to advertise a show on the I.D. Investigation Discovery network channel called: I (ALMOST) GOT AWAY WITH IT.

About : The criminals on the show are highlighted for not getting away with their sneaky crimes by leaving evidence behind and using household items as weapons.

Intent : This bag suggests that the things you purchase at grocery stores, and other home convenience stores alike, could and have been used as murder weapons.

Strategy : The bag instills fear and curiosity in the general public which in return, makes them want to view the micro-site online to find out more.

Tagline : Instant Gratification

Strategy : Focusing on the tactile aspect of Polaroid to convey instant gratification in situations where you would use the Polaroid camera. The campaign was targeted at 18-30 y/o males and females who support themselves financially, who are typically in college and have an interest in the art world, music/clubs/djs, surfing, skating - mainly "underground" / counter-culture, subcultures of interests. The designs have a double meaning if you care to imagine it.

NERF or NOTHIN'

This was a campaign created for a copywriting class focused on selling Nerf as a brand, instead of focusing on only one or a few of their products. These ads are targeted towards boys 8-14 and of course their parents. They were art directed to catch kids attention with colors and textures of the guns and toys. The familiarity of word definitions in elementary school is another strategy used to connect with boys 8-14 while expressing that Nerf is a fun competitive brand.

A Single Man is a parent company I created that would make a shaving kit targeted towards affluent 24-35 year old single men who are fond of wingtip shoes, skinny ties, smoked oak wood floors, black leather chairs, fitted suits and gin & tonics in their manhattan apartments. I designed the boxes with slabs of smoked oak and brushed steel. The face wash bottle entitled Bread & Butter was made from a prototype photo and the lids were made out of the bottom of shot glasses. The aftershave entitled Whiskey Skin is made out of a cubed whiskey glass and the smoked oak with a black marble top. The handles on the brush and razor were made from the same oak, and the box that holds all the pieces has a mirrored glass top with the logo etched into the mirror. The inside is lined with black velvet.

This is an ad I made to promote the shaving kit.

I was given a Calvin Klein ad in my Photo II class and I was told to re-shoot it in a way I see fit. CK to me is classy casual wear that's comfortable as well as attractive. I also find CK to have very neutral tones which is why I chose to shoot it in the midst of nature.

"Strange memories pervade this page as flashbacks begin to flicker. It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era — the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something, maybe not. In the long run...no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. History is hard to know, because of all the hired nonsense, but even without being sure of “history” it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time — and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened. There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. Sparks would strike anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting — on our side or theirs. So now, less than forty years later, with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

It was a great roaring sound wave as the Great Depression dissipated into the Post-World World War II boom, the dawn of the 1960s signaled the arrival of radical social, political, and cultural change in the United States. While the Civil Rights Movement, Vietnam War, and emergence of the counterculture highlighted the political controversy surrounding the nation at the time, a cultural renaissance soon replaced the traditions of art, music, and literature with much more experimental and alternative forms.

The decade was labeled the “Swinging Sixties” as they are known in popular culture. It's a term used by historians, journalists, and other objective academics; in some cases nostalgically to describe the counter culture and social revolution near the end of the decade; and pejoratively to describe the era as one of irresponsible excess and flamboyance because of the libertine attitudes that emerged during this decade. Rampant drug use has become inextricably associated with the counter-culture of the era, as Jefferson Airplane co-founder Paul Kantner mentions: "If you can remember anything about the sixties, then you weren't really there."

At Café 976, one of the oldest tributes to historical San Diego, look for the young woman with the low-voltage smile, in canvas shoes, denim jeans and some oddly placed face jewelry who’s eyeing a girl across the garden. That's your hostess, waitress, server and bus-girl. Long before Café 976 employed women of such eclectic stature or baited young afternoon street crowds of Pacific Beach, it had previously stood as a home, a school and then a quaint antique store before it was re-established in 1993 to the diverse coffeehouse bistro it tries to be today. When you see the billowing tree hanging low in naturally convenient ways above tables and individuals enthralled in their laptops, it's clear you’ve arrived at what looks like a warm, sunny, inviting Sunday afternoon brunch. 976 is casual and unpretentious, drawing a crowd that spans generations, incomes and ethnicities. It's quiet and not a bit fancy. Instead of shirts and ties, the staff and clientele seem to fade together, with the exception of a few aprons draped at girls’ waists. This place is laid back and trendy. Inside, you experience that historical homey feel with a creaky wooden floor, paintings of a local artist showcased on the walls, and a pastry case with desserts of all kinds. The bathroom is unisex, very large and casual, with a surfboard and bathing suit hanging in the corner. The large horizontal wall mirror made this bathroom feel like anything could be seen here. The tri-fold menu divides plates into original groupings – something you’d eat in the morning, something you’d munch on in the afternoon and something you’d devour a little past your bedtime. If you find yourself a bit confused, they use sun, moon and star symbols next to the food items so you can be sure to enjoy the right meal at the right time. Their food reads very diversely starting at eggs, toast and hash browns leading down to a spiced eggplant and something entitled “The French Connection,” a ciabatta bread sandwich with hard boiled eggs, cilantro mayo, Swiss cheese and a grilled chicken breast, sided with a small salad and some version of a balsamic dressing. Sandwiches that hold such alluring descriptions might taste better if they didn’t arrive thirty-three minutes later. Although, 976’s drink selection keeps you fully occupied during the anticipation. One of their original smoothies titled “Tropical,” could soothe a growling stomach and a tired hunger with espresso, coconut, orange, fresh banana, cream & ice.When servers arrive with your order, they auction off plates, reassuring diners wary about putting something unknown into their mouths. I'm here to say, don't be afraid. Nothing is very weird, actually, at all. Café 976 could be much more adventurous, but it’s playing it safe with an attitude that could appeal to anyone’s basic human reactions.If you’re hankering for a quick walk to the beach after your meal and can’t bear to leave the leftovers for trash, try spotting a girl for a take home box and your bill. This might add a good twelve minutes to your experience at Café 976; so there’s clearly an option to grab a bite of food with your hand for a snack and take off walking towards the pier. In the end, the visual aesthetics and menu potential of Café 976 could offer 1000% service to make this coffeehouse bistro a regular choice for dining.

Coming across Isaac Julien, a contemporary artist and filmmaker, he inspired to me to speak from a position I was familiar with and expose an overlooked and discounted culture within society. Isaac's critical writing engages questions of de-essentializing black and gay subjectivities. Suffice to say that when responding to a question put to him at a recent symposium regarding, "What it is was like to work as a black, gay filmmaker," Julien said that he "speaks from that positionality not for it". My vision was to put the focus on the homeless.I met a homeless man named Joe and spoke with him for a while.After understanding what his life is like and how he feels, I wrote a poem to reflect his understanding of life and painted it on a jacket. I then proceeded to give him the jacket to wear. It was completely up to him if he wanted to use my words to reveal his feelings to others.

The first article, "North Park Denuded" is about a specific mural unveiling in North Park, San Diego, California. The second article, "Painting Outside the Box" is about San Diego-based artists who are commissioned to transform electrical boxes into pieces of art.

North Park Denuded

Dressed in canvas and hanging below a gray sky, the 60’x30’ wall had scattered swatches of blue and purple hues, but all of the visitors who slowly trickled in were unsure of what lie beneath. On Friday, May 8, 2009 at 6pm, the mural located on Ray Street, the heart of San Diego’s art culture, was revealed for gazing.

The collaboration began on April 4,2009 with Master Photographer Cr. David Troyan, donator of the wall, and Grace Ann Piano, an Art Institute of California-San Diego instructor. After Grace had posted an ad on Craigslist looking for mural space in the local San Diego area, Troyan was more than willing to accept Piano’s ideas and work in partnership with her talent and her students. The mural incorporates inspirations from M.C. Escher, both of her Winter ’09 Fundamentals of Design classes that inspired an analogous color scheme containing only five colors, all donated by Frazee Paint, Troyan’s photography, and a little Ray Street history.

A few students worked heartily for a diligent 300 man-hours to complete the masterpiece. AIGA President, Adam Bauer (Graphic Design 5^th quarter) was one of the few to cut the veil and undress the mural. “It was an amazing experience. It’s therapeutic to give back to the community doing something you love outside of school,” Adam said. Everyone was able to see the mural best at the perspective point painted on the street which read, “STOP – LOOK – FOCUS – ENJOY”.

Students who participated in the mural are: Dustin Dettmar, Adam Bauer, Whitney Meyer, Jason Figueroa, Gilbert Andres, Marilyn Salameb, Ioanna Copsey, Frankie Padilla, Beena Devram. Haley Hanson, Jay Jurasevich, Heaither Geisler and Maurice Simmons.

Painting Outside The Box

A variety of mundane and lackluster boxes have been popping up around San Diego when telephone and electric lines come down. These seemingly misplaced pieces of urban acne protruding from the cement are none other than utility boxes.

SDG&E has commissioned these low-profile power transformers on concrete pedestals to move the power lines underground and to avoid power poles and noxious overhead lines. This allows the building of suburban planned communities and other construction expansions. But what about the people-friendly urban design and art culture of San Diego?

Many artists such as the ones involved in Uptown Partnership and The San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture have been fighting back against these boxes of the electronic age. “These programs have harnessed the creativity of artists and local non-profit advocates to paint more than thousands of utility boxes all over San Diego,” said Jay Turner of the North Park Main Street program, a volunteer artist. Their efforts have been improving sidewalk aesthetics, promoting culture, and discouraging graffiti vandalism. This new neighborhood art has created the so-called “Urban Art Trail” throughout San Diego County. The Chula Vista Downtown Business Association pays artists $50 per box for decoration and, for the most part, has business and public support for the makeover.

Artists interested in volunteering to paint a box should email Jessica Freeman, the Program Specialist for the Utility Art Box Program at Uptown Partnership, with their contact information and they will be added to the information distribution list once there are concrete plans for the next paint phase.
